Meet The Team: David Kabwe

Everything has a beginning, and so does every piece of jewelry at Mwezi Blu. Each creation starts with a single cut, the cut that transforms a rough gemstone into something exquisite, ready to be cherished.

At Mwezi Blu, the man behind that transformation is David Kabwe. As our Gemstone Cutter/Trainer, David is the one who shapes your desires into reality, starting from scratch and perfecting each stone until it perfectly fits your design, whether for a collection piece or custom jewelry.

“Sharing the same vision with Vi inspires me every day,” David says, referring to Mwezi Blu founder Vilune.

David’s work is more than a job, it’s a craft that blends precision, passion, and purpose. His day often begins with searching for that one gem worth cutting, examining each stone’s potential, and bringing out its true character.

One skill David has mastered is the Gem Card, a tool that provides exact guidelines on the angles and sizes for cutting. It’s this mastery that ensures every stone he works on becomes something extraordinary.

He recalls one of his proudest moments, cutting Zambian Emeralds for a pair of gold, emerald & diamond earrings.

“I remember the sparkle, the reflections. I wish you could see that piece today and feel what I felt.”

For David, working with ethically sourced gemstones is essential.

“It carries real energy without imperfections and doesn’t cause harm to the environment,” he says.

David grew up with a father who loved craftsmanship, and it was that influence that shaped him into the cutter he is today. His father’s creativity inspired him to pursue this path as a career, and to this day, David is proud that his work plays a part in Mwezi Blu’s mission, including the 5% of profits going toward school sponsorships.

Being based in South Luangwa makes his work feel complete.

“It feels like everything comes from one place, the gemstones, the brand, the story,” he shares.

What makes David unique is his love for seeing people smile

“Next time you visit our shop, wear a smile, it makes me even more creative.”

If David were a gemstone, he would be Tourmaline, a stone with over 72 colors, some even mixed, a reflection of his own versatility and vibrance. Outside the workshop, David enjoys swimming, playing pool, and connecting with people. He describes himself in three words: Love, Brilliant, Unity.

David takes his role seriously, knowing that one mistake in cutting can affect the entire jewelry-making process. That’s why he works with care, precision, and patience.

“Every day is a learning day,” he says, a quote he lives by.

And when asked about his favorite piece? Without hesitation, he names the Emerald Earring, a creation that combines elegance with the beauty of a perfectly cut stone. This piece was a Bespoke requested by one of our clients, check it out below:
